Number of Registered Vehicles to Hit 2 Million Mark

Number of Registered Vehicles to Hit 2 Million MarkIn 2007 the number of registered vehicles in Shenzhen was a million. And it only took five years for the number of vehicles in Shenzhen to double as the number of registered vehicles is expected to hit the 2 million mark since the city issues around 800 to a thousand new registrations in a day.

Combined with the number of vehicles that are registered outside of Shenzhen will bring the total of 2.3 million vehicles on the road. This high amount of vehicles on the road is creating traffic jams and contributes to air pollution that challenges the air quality in the city.

City road safety management rules recently took effect last January, which allows that government to take necessary measures that will control the amount of vehicles by increasing operation costs, encourage public transport use, and limiting vehicles in busy areas during rush hours. The Shenzhen transport commission is also considering to increase parking fees in the central business districts to further encourage the use of public buses and the Metro rail.

During the annual meeting of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee, one political adviser said that the city should look into the traffic situation by using certain methods such as a multi dimensional transport system, an extensive road network, encourage the use of public transport and creating a quick response system to handle traffic accidents.
