Oobleck! What IB Chem Students Cooked up for Grade One
Fortunately, the grade one team knows that the IB Chemistry students explore chemical reactions at the molecular level. So we wondered, “What if the Bayside students demonstrated a chemical mixture for our grade one students?”
That is how Oobleck was born in grade one on February 15th. Mr. Serio and six of his IB Chemistry students visited our Jingshan campus and led demonstrations in each of the three grade one classrooms.
First, the children were asked to observe the two ingredients in Oobleck. Here are Julien, Peter, and Sherazade examining the water and cornstarch before they are mixed. Then our grade one students had an opportunity to mix the solid and liquid.
Chiharu (next to Lin) said, “I think it’s still a solid because when I stirred it, it was so hard.”
Finally the children had an opportunity to explore and consider the properties of this non-Newtonian liquid. Here is what Colin (right) said about Oobleck,”I think I made a giant pizza out of solids and liquids.”
