Shenzhen to Begin Low Carbon Development Plan
The 2011-2020 plan for Low Carbon Development of Shenzhen will include a low carbon index system. By doing this Shenzhen will be cutting its carbon emissions by 39 percent if they follow the low carbon plan. This type of plan is the first to be implemented among Chinese cities.
The low carbon index system has set targets in 20 aspects, starting from reduced emissions and to increasing forest coverage to create a higher input in low carbon technologies. The low carbon index also showed that the emerging industries that give importance in developing a low carbon economy would account for 40 percent of the city’s GDP by the year 2015. Also in 2015 the number of green buildings in Shenzhen will reach 40 percent plus an additional of 100,000 new energy vehicles to be on the road as well.
Half of the energy that will be used by the city will be clean energy that utilizes natural gas, nuclear energy, wind and solar power. Shenzhen will also be using a complete system that will help calculate and assess the carbon emissions produced by city by the year 2020 and to further reduce toxic emissions from non-green vehicles a possibility of implementing a car emission fee is being drafted but no definite timeline has been set.
