First Round of Medal Awardees Selection to Start in MayThe Municipal Government of Shenzhen have decided to award two types of medals to people to give them recognition to their efforts, services and contribution to the city’s development. The two medal types are the Medal of the Grand Bougainvillea and the Medal of the Bougainvillea.

The Medal of the Bougainvillea Star is usually awarded to people being recognized for their bravery, philanthropy and innovation that they contributed to the city’s development and its recipient are chosen every two years. While the Medal of the Grand Bougainvillea is award to no more than two people for their contribution to the social development of the city.

Expatriates, Hong Kong and Macao residents are eligible as awardees since recipients don’t need to be holders of a Shenzhen Hukou. The first round of awardees selection will begin in May, and local residents are encouraged to participate. The medals will be awarded on August 26 in selected years to celebrate the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

City legislators are also proposing to set up an honorable orders same as the Grand Bauhnia Medal which the highest award the city of Hong Kong awards that recognizes a person’s lifetime achievements and greatest contributions to a city’s society.
