More Residents Traveling Abroad for Medical Care
Medical tourism is a term that was created by travel agencies and media to describe a popular trend practiced by middle and high income residents in the city in which they travel to other countries to seek medical care.
Among the most popular destinations are Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea and along with a publicity campaign, visa application processes are not convenient due to the popularity of the places. A survey has shown that Asia is the home of six of the top ten medical tourism destinations in the world.
One woman said that she went to Singapore along with friends to have medical checkups where medical services were more professional and cost only about 1,000 yuan, the same if one has checkups in Shenzhen. Once the checkup is complete she could even have a short vacation in the country. According to the World Health Organization Singapore has the best medical system in Asia. Singapore also offers multiple entry visas to Shenzhen residents and is only a two hour flight away. South Korea and Japan are also fast becoming popular destinations for facial and medical treatments.
One medical tourism company in Shenzhen began arranging medical tours in 2009, usually lasting four to five days with an average cost of 20,000 yuan. Before residents depart for their trips the agency does a background check on the medical institutions to ensure the safety of the travelers. Travelers are also subjected to fines when they cancel reservations with some medical institutions.
