Taiwan to Open Doors to Individual Tourists
Shenzhen residents are now allowed to visit Taiwan as individual tourists as a deal between the two cities has been created. Previously residents were only allowed to enter Taiwan if they are traveling in a tour package. Shenzhen is now part of the ten mainland cities that is allowed to enter Taiwan.
The association for Tourism Exchange across the Taiwan Straits and Taiwan’s Strait Tourism Association have reached a deal yesterday that allows residents from Tianjin, Nanjing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi’an, Jinan, Fuzhou and Shenzhen to enter Taiwan as individual tourists. From April 28 residents from Chongqing, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Chengdu will be allowed to enter Taiwan. Dates for the remaining cities are not yet set but will be announced within the year.
Several local agencies doubt that the option of self guided tours will not increase the number of Shenzhen residents going to Taiwan mainly because just applying for a tour is a little complicated and time consuming. Currently there are five agencies that are qualified to organize package and individual tours to Taiwan. One manager of a local agency also said that the market for self guided tours is mainly aimed at business people with high incomes.
