Bicycle Riders Reminded not to Use Vehicle Lanes
Cyclists renting bicycles in Yantian are being constantly reminded not to use the bicycles on vehicle lanes. The reminder came after people were caught riding the rented bikes on the road. Violators caught will have their rental licenses suspended and face punishment from the traffic police.
For the first violation, riders will be not be allowed to rent or use bicycles for a week, followed by a month on the second violation. The third violation will cancel the rider’s eligibility to use or rent bicycles. This punishment will be carried out by the rental service administration. Traffic police can also issue 50 yuan fines to riders caught using the bikes on vehicle lanes. If the rider refuses to pay, traffic police can confiscate the bicycle.
Most violators usually turn over the bicycles rather than pay the fine which creates a problem with the bike rental management who have to retrieve the bikes at the police station, increasing their workload.
Since the initiation of the bicycle rental system on a trial basis last year, Yantian’s bike rental management has already issued 26,000 rental cards and will begin charging rental fees on Sunday. Yantian is the first district to offer the government funded bicycle rental system in the city. Currently the bike rental system offers 3,000 bicycles to use with users ranging from office workers to delivery staff and students.
