Li Na to Face Yaroslava Shvedova for a Spot in the French Open Quarterfinals
Defending French Open Li Na was able to reach the French Open last 16 after defeating American Christina McHale 3-6. 6-2, 6-1 last Saturday. The Seventh seed Li Na is the only Asian remaining in the singles competition after Peng Shuai was defeated by second seeded Maria Sharapova. Li will be facing Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova to gain a spot in the quarterfinals.
Li said that she had to rely on her experience to defeat McHale who is currently ranked 36th. Li said that McHale was a good player and she was able to outplay her in the first set. Li struggled with her serve and back hand during the first set and suffered two breaks after she drove the ball to the net in both occasions. She was able to recovers and played her game in the second set and then breaking McHale with well timed drop shots to earn another break in their eighth game and forced errors to her opponent.
Age and experience favored Li as the match lasted longer, giving her the opportunity to try out different shots and finding gaps in McHale’s game. Li won her first Grand Slam in 2011 Roland Garros becoming the fifth oldest and first time women singles champion at the age of 29.
