Local Shenzhen Athletes to Participate in 2012 London Olympics
Shenzhen Sports Training Administrative Camp director Zhang Yunhong confirmed that five Shenzhen athletes have qualified to compete in the 2012 London Olympics. Local Olympians who qualified are Chinese race walker Liu Hong, the star in the men’s race walking Chen Qing, He Zi a diver specializing in the springboards with synchronized diver Luo Xi and freestyle swimmer Wang Haibing.
Liu Hong starting training in 2002 when she was 15 and joined the national team in 2006. She won the World Junior and Asian Games titles in 2006, she also took fourth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Last March Liu smashed the 20 kilometer Asian record at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Taicang. Liu is currently training in Italy.
Meanwhile He Zi won the gold medal along with Wu Minxia in the synchronized 3 meter springboard and silver in the 3 meter springboard in the 2011 World Aquatics Championships. Chen Ding broke Asia’s record in the men’s 20 kilometer race walk in March.
Aside from the five Olympians several other athletes are hoping to join them namely, gymnast Huang Qiushuang, women hockey players Liang Meiyu, open water swimmers Huang Yunkun and Fang Yanqiao, and pentathlete Wang Guan.
