New Rule to Exempt Residents from Basic Funeral Services

New Rule to Exempt Residents from Basic Funeral ServicesAccording to a new rule that will take effect today, residents need not to pay basic funeral service fees of up to 1,830 yuan after the death of their loved one. The new rule will exempt Shenzhen residents with or without permanent resident status from paying the basic funeral fees.

The basic funeral fees will include transportation, rent for a small memorial hall, storing the body, cremation and a ten year consignment for the cremated remains. The new rule will cover all residents without any additional conditions or any thresholds. The deceased families can then complete funeral procedures with a death certificate or a hukou.

According to government rules, fees for any other optional expenses for body make up, decoration and memorial hall arrangement and memorial services will be charged accordingly. There are about 13,000 deceased cremated in Shenzhen every year and seventy percent of them does not have permanent resident status.
