Shenzhentong and Octopus Card to be Incorporated into One Card
Shenzhentong Card Ltd said that the Shenzhentong and Hong Kong’s Octopus card will be interchangeable before the year ends. The new smart card will have one chip holding two accounts. The new card can be used by border crossing travelers in public transportation, supermarkets, restaurants and convenience stores in both cities.
When the smart card is used in Shenzhen it will automatically deduct in the local currency, same goes when the card is used in Hong Kong. The new smart card is now being tested in a laboratory and if everything goes well the card might be introduced by the end of the year.
The Shenzhentong card is a contactless smart card system that is used for electronic payment. The card is also being used for quick payments and access to Metro lines, buses and taxis. Supermarkets such as Jusco, Vanguard, China Resources and A-Best and convenience stores such as Vango and 7-Eleven also accept the Shenzhentong card as a method of payment.
The Company that makes the Shenzhentong card also plans to expand its use so it can used for paying parking lots and fast food restaurants in the future.
