Thousands Joined Charity Event amid the Summer Heat
The charity event Walk for a Million held last Sunday saw more than 12,000 residents joining to help raise funds for charitable causes and do a little exercise amid the blistering summer heat. The event is the brain child of the Shenzhen Project Care office, the Shenzhen Special Zone and the Care Foundation. The walk was done along the 3 kilometers coast of Shenzhen Bay Park.
A management director of a Japanese finance company organized 40 of his employees to join the walk. He said that the Japanese people received a lot of donations from around the world after last year’s earthquake and tsunami disaster and this is their own way of paying gratitude back. Director of OCS Children’s fund Chen Manning said that these charitable organizations and people had a good reason to participate in the city’s first charity walk. Most of Chen’s fund has supported overseas Chinese student organizations that helped children in China’s impoverished and remote areas to receive proper education. Chen also said that this type of activities will help turn philanthropy into a habit.
The Walk for a Million event generated more than 2.5 million yuan in donations with more than 100 enterprises and organizations have donated. The money raised will be used to help sanitation workers having financial difficulties and provide disaster relief, fund scientific research and a hotline for the care of elderly people.
