Mercedes Denies Rumors on Replacing BYD as Battery Supplier
Daimler Group is denying rumors on the breakup between BYD and its Mercedes line based on reports that Mercedes-Benz switched to a different battery supplier because of reports of mechanical failure from the batteries produced by BYD. Shenzhen based BYD have been producing rechargeable electric car batteries since its establishment in 2003.
Several rumors were heard that Mercedes was looking for an alternate battery supplier due to problems with spontaneous combustion in the BYD electric car batteries. The rumors were also saying that Mercedes and the American auto firm Tesla are joining together on electric car researches, which set off speculations that Mercedes was indeed looking for a new supplier. The Tesla firm is also a known major producer of electric car batteries and electric motors.
This prompted BYD to issue a statement of cooperation with the Shanghai Securities News which stated that the rumors were not true. And a spokesperson for Daimler China also denied the rumors on replacing BYD as the Mercedes battery supplier.
