City to Build a New Convention Center in Bao’an District
Several district officials along with the former science, industry, trade and information technology commission are planning to build a new convention and exhibition center near the city airport in Bao’an district. Although the commission has been divided into several entities, members still use its former name.
The new convention and exhibition center will cover more than 200,000 square meters and will be constructed south of the airport near the city’s transportation hub and harbor. A letter from the city’s deputies to the Municipal People Congress, said that the city’s current convention and exhibition center can’t handle the city’s increasing demand for large scale events. The old center only covers 105,000 square meters of indoor space allotted for exhibitions.
Several cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai all have at least six large indoor exhibition centers, which brings the total of exhibition centers in each city to more than 300,000 square meters. Popular fairs such as the China Hi Tech Fair had trouble expanding for nine years due to the lack of space. The new convention and exhibition center will be attached with the ongoing hotel project that is already been approved and will start construction this year.
Bao’an district is the ideal place for the new convention center since its close to Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Dongguan and has many key industries and companies.
