China Continues Tradition of Choosing Basketball Players as Flag Bearer
Yi Jianlian, the second Chinese basketball player to join the NBA confirmed that he was chosen to be the country’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony in the London Olympics. The opening ceremony will start at 9 pm London time or 4 am Beijing time.
Shenzhen raised Yi Jianlian, play for the Dallas Mavericks start his basketball career in Guangdong. In 2007 he was drafted in the NBA and played for the Washington Wizards before returning to China during the NBA lockout. Xiao Tian the deputy chief of the Chinese Olympic delegation said that China’s flag bearer will be tall, famous and handsome thus providing a positive image of the Asian sporting superpower.
China has long been choosing basketball players as flag bearers for the opening ceremonies in the Olympic Games. During Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Former NBA star Yao Ming was chosen to be the flag bearer for the Chinese delegation. And during its first official appearance as a member of the London Olympic family, more than 50 athletes and officials from the Chinese delegation along with several nations came together in the traditional flag raising and welcoming ceremony inside the games village in London.
