City Plans to Host International Marathon
An international marathon will be hosted by city officials later this year or by next year that could become an annual event. The city sports authorities and the Shenzhen culture, sports and tourism bureau have already designated a department that will handle the planning and organization of the said event.
Also in addition to the standard 42.2 kilometer marathon, race authorities are also considering including a half marathon, a ten kilometer and a 5 kilometer race to accommodate a wide range of possible participants. Deputy Ding Fuyuan of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress along with seven other officials are putting forward a proposal to the congress annual session that will suggest Shenzhen to organize a marathon that will promote the image of the city, just as Xiamen did to their city.
Xiamen International Marathon usually brings in 100 million yuan annually in tourism and has become one of the four major marathon events in China. Shenzhen has been hosting the Yantian Mountain Marathon for three years and led by the Shenzhen Mountaineering and Outdoor Association which raise funds for charitable causes.
