China Sweeps Badminton after Lin Wins the Gold in the Men’s Singles
In the finals of the men’s badminton singles China’s Lin Dan defeated Lee Chong Wei to become the first man to defend the title. Lee charged to hard and raised the Malaysian hopes of winning it first Olympic gold medal but Lin prevailed and denied his long time rival of the medal in their second Olympic final.
Lin barely defeated Lee to win the gold medal in Beijing, but last Sunday he had to fight for his survival under great pressure from Lee to win the gold. During the deciding games Le lost the last point as he pushed a lob past the baseline that sent Lin into frenzy and gave China its fourth gold in badminton.
China also became the first team to win all five badminton gold medals in the Olympics after winning the men’s and women’s singles and doubles in the last two world championships. China missed out in Beijing when two of its players Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng lost the men’s double finals but came through by becoming the first Chinese men to win the doubles in London.
The whole team and coaches celebrated after most of the crowd have left, forming a circle on the court posing for group photos on the podium.
