New Transportation Hub Set to Open in Buji
A new transport interchange currently under construction will be taking over passenger trains operations in the outdated Shenzhen West Railway Station in Longgang Buji Area by year’s end. Then Shenzhen West will be set aside for cargo trains.
The transport hub will be linking the Metro lines, taxi services and bus routes and can handle passengers five times the capacity of Shenzhen West. The hub can handle 50,000 passengers a day once it opens then further expansions of the hub will then boost the capacity to 90,000. The decision to open a new hub came after complaints from residents about the Shenzhen West deteriorating conditions made the news.
The railway operator Pingnan Railway Co. said that they have been applying for renovation permits a couple of times but was consistently rejected by the government since the station is not list with the government passenger railway network plan. The city urban planning, land resources commission said that the decisions on building and operating railway stations are done by the nation’s railway regulator and it’s out of their hands. They also said that even if the station will be rebuilt it will not be passenger station since the national railway regulator will be cancelling some of the routes.
In 1989 the railway station was previously designed are a cargo station, and because of the low ticket prices and location the number of passengers increased. The station was told to stop handling passengers in 2010, but allowed to continue operations and handles half of the city long distances rail passengers.
