New Smart Card to be Released Before the National Holidays
Just before the start of the National Day Holidays, the Hong Kong Octopus card and the Shenzhentong card will be interchangeable. The new smart card can manage two accounts using only one chip. Travelers that cross borders frequently can use the card for taking public transport, shopping at convenience stores and supermarkets and restaurants on both cities.
The card will automatically deduct money in the local currency of the city the card was used in. the new smart card is now in the final stages of testing and its release was moved two months ahead of the intended schedule. Now the smart card will be release a few days before the National Day holidays. Around 400,000 people crosses the Shenzhen Hong Kong border each day thus providing a good market for the smart card.
The Shenzhentong card is a contactless card system that provides quick electronic payments and access to Metro Lines, buses and taxis in the city. The card can also be used in several supermarket chains and convenience stores. The Octopus card is used in more than 45,000 businesses and 60,000 point of sale terminals in Hong Kong. Merging the two cards will facilitate commuting and spending in the travel and economic activity between the two cities.
