Shenzhen Athletes Given Sunshine Awards for Winning Gold in the Olympics
Two Shenzhen athletes who won gold medals at the recently concluded London Olympics were given Sunshine Awards at the Shenzhen Bay Sport Center yesterday. The annual awards is part of a local newspaper Daily Sunshine together with Sina.com to recognize and honor people in their success in the fields of culture, sports, arts, finance, fashion, science, technology and public service.
Among the athletes awarded was Chen Ding who won gold in the men’s 20 km race walking. He Zi for winning gold in the 3 meter springboard. Hou Yifan an 18 year old female chess player who won two world championships was also awarded with a Sunshine Award and Jeremy Lin who rose to fame in the NBA.
Other winners were Yinshun an abbot in the Hongfa Temple and Zhang Lili a teacher who saved two students after pushing them out of the way of a runaway school bus in Heilongjiang Province. Yuan Geng, the founder of the Shenzhen Industrial Zone was given attribute award for his role as a pioneer of reforms.
The awarding ceremony featured performances from performers and singers from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the mainland. The ceremony also marked the 11th year of Daily Sunshine.
