Students Rent Out Rooms for Migrant Workers to Spend Qixi Festival
Several college students in Henan Province pledged to book more than 200 hotel rooms for the families of migrant workers so that they can spend time together during the Chinese Valentine’s Day or Qixi Festival.
The idea is the brain child of 12 undergraduates with majors in construction and engineering at the Zhengzhou Jiaotong University. They came up with the idea after spending a month long on the job training at a construction site working with migrant laborers. Migrant workers have tough living conditions, eating from lunchboxes at the site and sleeping in bunkhouses with other migrant workers. Some of the workers have been away from their families for years while they work for a living in cities.
The students wanted to provide a more comfortable environment for migrants to help unite and spend the festival with loved one and their family members. The students also hoped that their noble act will draw attention to the status of the migrant workers.
Total cost for renting all the rooms is about 18,000 yuan, the students have already raised 12,000yuan from the wages they have earned during their part time jobs and the rest of the money came from their own pockets. They chose to rent the rooms on Qixi festival to make their action more meaningful.
