Commission to Create a Unified Taxi Call Service
The Shenzhen transport commission is planning to create a unified taxi call service before the year ends by integrating the city’s four GPS taxi operators. The call service will allow passengers to call taxis services by calling one number, wherein operators will transfer the call request to one of the four taxi companies with each having separate cab request numbers.
Along with technical support, the transport commission will work on fee standards, trust mechanisms and operation modes between the driver and passenger. Once the service is operational it will solve problems that are usually faced by taxi companies and passengers. Most of the local taxi companies offers call services since 2004, but have either stopped or slowed down as small taxi companies have limited amount of taxis available to do call requests. One passenger even said that taxi services in Shenzhen are more of a negotiation between the passenger and driver rather than a unified service.
While some taxi drivers are not interested in the unified call service since there are no requirements for passengers to use requested cabs. Some taxi companies who receive taxi requests through phones sometimes offer fare to several taxis instead of giving the fare to the nearest cab. Once the driver accepts the fare he must reach the designated place in a designated time or faces a fine from the company. But passengers can either chose to use or not the requested taxi.
