New Smart Cards to be Issued Next Week
On September 4th administrators of the Shenzhentong and Hong Kong Octopus cards will start issuing the newly joint cards in both cities. Border crossing travelers can now use one card in paying for public transportation, supermarkets and convenience stores as well as several restaurants in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
The new card will be using one chip that can access two accounts which will deduct the local currency automatically depending on which city the card was used. On how many cards will be issued and how much the card cost still remains unknown. The Shenzhentong card is a contactless smart card uses a system that provides a quick way for electronic payment and access to metro lines, buses, taxis and small business around Shenzhen.
Meanwhile the Kong Kong Octopus card is accepted by more than 4,500 service providers in Hong Kong using more than 60,000 scanning machines found in cark parks, public transportation, retail business, and entertainment facilities.
