Police Gave Out More than 16 Million Yuan in Rewards for Tips Leading to Successful Arrests of Criminals
For the past three years Shenzhen police having giving out rewards to whistle blowers whose gave clues to the police that led to crackdown on crimes and arrest of several suspects. Launched in 2009, the police have received more than 47,000 clues and have awarded more than 16 million yuan.
The reward system was to encourage the public to report crimes and provide tips. The city set aside 5 million yuan in funding to support the reward system every year and police offers 100 yuan up to 20,000 yuan for every successful tip that they receive. The police then use the clues provided by the residents which led to arrests for more than 16,917 crimes, arrested 351 fugitives and cornered 27,254 suspects. More than 18,820 residents were rewarded by the system.
The reports can be made anonymously and police are encouraging residents to report crimes by calling their 24 hour hotline or by fax. They can also give tips and reports online by logging on to www.szga.gov.cn. Residents can also mail in tips using letters to the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau. Residents who gave successful tips can either claim the rewards themselves or commission others to get the reward for them or have the reward deposited directly to their bank accounts.
