Brisbane Rugby Series Finals
Having played all season on Saturday, last Sunday saw the start of the finals series for the Brisbane rugby Premiership competition. Queensland University continued their meteoric, late season rise up the table to defeat minor premiers, Brothers, 59-12 in the major semi-final to book a Grand Final appearance on September 23 at Ballymore. The students, minus Reds inside-back Mike Harris called up for the Wallabies on Saturday, were bolstered by the return of another Reds player in the centres, Luke Morahan. After a solid season in Super 15, Morahan excelled against a 14-man Brothers outfit scoring a hat-trick in his side’s impressive win. Also young backrower Curtis Browning, despite a yellow card against Easts the week before, continued to impress with his strong ball running.
In the minor semi-final, Sunnybank overcame a determined GPS team 30-27. Fly-half Dion Taumata, having moved up from the Gold Coast, controlled much of the game for Sunnybank. The boy from Merrimac on the Gold Coast who graduated from Keebra Park High School in 2010, also played for the Australian Schoolboys that year. Of Kiwi heritage I have personally watched his progression through the ranks from a young 7 year-old who lived next door, to school teacher to a future that could see him go on to higher honours. Sunnybank will now play Brothers next week in the Preliminary Final to determine who will play Uni in the GF.
