Expectant Couples can Get Free Examinations to Prevent Birth Defects

Expectant Couples can Get Free Examinations to Prevent Birth DefectsThe city commission of health, population and family planning said that new born babies suffering for any of the six diseases can be treated for free at city hospitals until they reach two years old.

According to the commission the six diseases includes Mediterranean anemia a genetic blood disorder, congenital adrenal hyperplasia which affect sex characteristics, congenital hypothyroidism a hormone deficiency that stunts growth, fabism a type of acute anemia and phenylketonuria that can stunt overall development and causes hearing disorders.

Statistics gathered by the commission showed that 16 out of 1,000 prenatal babies starting from a few months before childbirth to a few months after birth are suffering from birth defects in Shenzhen. Most common diseases range from heart disease or being born with extra fingers, toes or cleft plates. Study also showed that most of these defects happens to newborns that are born during the changing seasons.

It showed that most of the babies born in March, April, October and November suffer from birth defects every year. To reduce these birth defects free examinations are given to expectant couples as they think that this might be related to the mother’s health since its easier for them to get ill during their pregnancy.
