Survey Shows Expatriate Views on Living Costs in Shenzhen
A recent survey around Shenzhen showed that expatriates are starting to feel the rising costs in the city which could possibly be even more expensive that the cost of living in New York City. In the list of the 50 most expensive cities for expatriates, Shenzhen has risen to 30th from its previous rank of 43rd.
The survey is provided by Mercer, a global company that provides consultation, outsourcing and investment services. However a number of expatriates have not agreed with the survey results. An expatriate from Paris said accommodations in Shenzhen are much cheaper than in his hometown while an American said his 30,000 yuan rent for a 200square meter apartment can rent a much bigger apartment in New York.
Other expatriates said that food and transportation is also cheaper compared to their hometowns and eating at restaurants is more affordable than cooking it themselves. Others have also said that watching movies in Shenzhen is quite expensive while others complain on the price of high quality wine which can be 1000 yuan per bottle compared to their hometowns in which the same bottle of wine only costs 150 yuan.
