City Marks World Car Free Day by Introducing First Electric Bus Route
The city transport commission started the first electric bus route last Sunday, which is a milestone for the city in its environmental protection scheme and in celebration of the World Car Free Day that happened on Saturday.
The north to south bus route starts from Xili to Shekou, route 226 and is 28.5 kilometers long operates from 6:00am until 10:20 pm everyday. Several charging stations are built at the terminals at both ends and the city will be allotting 60 buses on the route by the end of the year. When fully charge the electric bus can travel for 200 kilometers potentially cutting costs by 50 percent compared to using diesel powered buses. Furthermore acceleration of electric buses is much faster and has no noise and lesser vibration when being operated.
Pingshan New Area has also joined in the environmental effort by placing 15 electric buses on route M297. This will also be the first time Pingshan uses electric buses as well and is also a step in their goal of becoming a model of low carbon sustainable development.
There are 2,350 new energy buses in Shenzhen this includes 280 electric buses. The new buses can help save more than 19 tones of fuel and cuts carbon emissions by more than 60,000 tons and reducing fuel costs by 160 million yuan. By the end of the year the city will be expanding its electric vehicle fleet to 1,000 electric buses and 500 electric taxis.
