Checkpoints to See an Increase of Cross Border Travelers during the Holidays
An estimated 5 million travelers will be crossing the border between Shenzhen and Hong Kong during the eight day holiday that will start on Sunday. According to the Shenzhen General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection the number shows an 11.2 percent increase compared to last year’s holiday period.
The increase is expected to happen at the Futian and Shenzhen Bay checkpoints and other main checkpoints in Shenzhen. Entry will peak during Saturday and Sunday with travelers mostly coming from Hong Kong and Macao. Exit peaks is expected to happen on Monday and Tuesday and will be consists of mostly mainland travelers. Peak hours occur from 8:30 am and 12 pm.
More than 640,000 travelers will cross the border each day during the holidays and is expected to increase to 720,000 cross border travelers by Tuesday which most checkpoints consider the one day travel peak. During this period the city checkpoints will be placing more staff on duty to help maintain order and checkpoints between Shenzhen and Hong Kong will keep each other informed on the real time traveler flow.
The huge number of travelers is attributed to this year rare alignment of the lunar and standard calendar with gives residents an eight day holiday along with two new policies implemented namely the toll free roads during national holidays and the policy that allowed non hukou holders to apply for Hong Kong travel permits in their own home town.
