A People Forum Panel Lunch: Bridging the East/West DivideA People Forum Panel Lunch Bridging the East/West Divide Thu | 11 October 2012

Modern careers are increasingly globalised and being an expatriate means often dealing with unique and specific challenges that come with working outside our ‘home’ cultures.

Our panel of 4 prominent people leaders will lead this discussion on the complexities, challenges and opportunities faced by Western managers joining Asian companies and, vice versa, Asian leaders in Western firms. They will share their East-West experiences which stretch from Sydney to Singapore, London, Kuwait, New York and HK, while proposing tips for those working in an “alien” culture – be it company or country.

Introducing our Panel:

Jolene Chen, Chief Human Resources Officer, Prudential Corporation Asia
After graduating in Singapore, Jolene worked in logistics, shipping & consumer goods before moving to London as Global Head of HR and training teams for Standard Chartered. She returned to HK just over a year ago to take on the lead Prudential HR role for Asia.

Harry O’Neill, Managing Partner, Heidrick & Struggles
An Irishman who started as a derivatives trader with JP Morgan, Harry worked in London, Kuwait and Sydney before leaving Deutsche Bank to go into global senior executive recruitment, within the finance sector. He has been a leader in this specialised field, living in HK, for almost 20 years.

Ros Coffey, Global Head of Talent, Nomura Group
A University of Sydney Economics graduate, Ros worked with Salomon Bros in London & was a founding member of Michael Page in New York before joining Lehman Bros in 2003 as the Chief Administrative Office, then moving to Global HR lead roles with Barclays and Nomura.

Moderator: Leigh Stewart, General Manager – People, Safety and Environment, Leighton Asia
Using his Law degree from Charles Darwin University, Leigh worked in advisory roles on strategic IR and HR issues to many Australian companies when with the Australian Industry Group (AiG). Later, he was GM of HR & Safety with Visy Industries before joining Leighton in 2010.
