City to Relocate Trees to Give Way to New Metro Line
The city is planning to relocate more than 50,000 trees to give way to the construction of new Metro lines making it one of the largest tree transportation project in history. Most of the trees that will be relocated from designated Metro line are 5 to 10 years old.
Construction of the Metro line 7 is well on its way and some of the trees found along Xiangmei Road and Binhai Boulevard will be relocated to nearby areas of greenery. While the rest of the tree relocation project will last until spring. The urban management bureau said that relocated tress falls into 100 tree species that are not rare or old. Some of the trees such as the 100 year old camphor tree near the Yinhu Bus station was saved after the bureau persuaded the contractor to do some revisions to alter the line.
Some of the trees that are on the relocation list were planted during the Universiade last year and those trees will be flattened by a typhoon if they will be relocated due to their young age and shallow root system.
