Bookstores in Shenzhen should diversify their products and needs to add services such a toys, stationery or coffee kiosks to remain competitive in this digital age. During the opening ceremony of the 13th Shenzhen Reading Month, Francoise Debruille said that the city’s promotion of books and reading is quite impressive but bookstores in the city must be more innovative and adapt to the times where in online bookstores and digital books are gaining popularity.
E-reading is popular in many English speaking countries and is slowly emerging in European countries and is threatening the survival of bookstores. Although bookstores are not completely gone, the number is certainly decreasing due to competition from internet sales. To fight this bookstores must adapt to the times and changes. Bookstores must broaden its range of products creating a one stop shop that not only carry books but other items as well. Bookstores should also do various events of set up coffee kiosks to keep customers coming in.
A successful bookstore should act as a second home for people, turning it into a place where a person could relax, enjoy a quiet moment and read a book.
