Wallabies vs England at Twickenham

Wallabies vs England at TwickenhamPretty patchy game, to be honest, if you watched all of it. We were lucky to win after poor English execution in the last 15 mins. To be fair I think that the Wallabies played with great heart, as they always do, you can never question their desire, but they had a little more structure and width this time around. They are still struggling from set piece ball, but scored a great try from unstructured counter attack.

That’s the way all Australian teams need to play, attack from anything you get and stretch and threaten the opposition with width, skill and speed.

Finally they moved the ball to space and gave Cummins a great opportunity to finish. This play must be encouraged and expanded upon against the Italians. They (the Azzurri) are set piece attack orientated and will try and play from stoppage to stoppage, they will slow the game and give the referee an opportunity to own the game.

The Australians must move the ball to space, isolate weak defenders and slow tight forwards, and return on them for 80 mins, and then we have a great chance of success in attack.

The previous game plans particularly over the past 13 tests have been far too narrow and relied on set piece dominance and go forward ball. The Australian forwards have failed to dominate possession or the gain line and the backs are too narrow and predictable as they are only allow a few close moves and have not threatened and kicked most possession aimlessly away. We have the players, we just need them to be encouraged by the coach to play with some abandon, play with speed and width and reward their enthusiasm and passion with some continuity and tries.

I have never been concerned about the injury toll as we always field the next best team we can, I’ve been more concerned about how we have played rather than who was playing. It’s time for the players to stand up and play and time for the coach to either encourage this endeavour or look for his next job.

Both players and coach are capable, but we just need to see the right plan executed with good skill, tempo and the willingness to risk rather than die wondering.

At the moment we are just dying, so we can chose to either keep doing what is bad and deflating or live on the edge for a while and see if that tastes any better.
