Geologists Request Government Assistance in Protecting Fossil Community
Chinese geologists are asking for a government sanctioned research and protection for a plant fossil community found in Dapeng New Area that is said to be more than 200 million years old. The said fossil community is said to be in the early Jurassic period and around 100 fossils were visible.
The plant fossils are found in a quarry and is said to be significant for research on the biological diversity, geographic and climate variations in southern China during the Jurassic period. It is also important for the studies of coal bearing layers in the Guangdong Province area. Several of the fossils were already destroyed due to quarrying and reclamation because of the lack of protection while some were weathered due to exposure to the elements.
Geologists said that the area where the fossils were found should be placed under protection and a geological museum should be built to facilitate further research, but the research plan can’t be realized unless without the support of the government.
The Dapeng Peninsula has a very unique diversity of land plants from 200million years ago and the government should at least build a natural museum and currently none of the plant fossils are placed on display in the Shenzhen Museum.
