More Beds to be Added to Welfare Centers to Accomodate Growing Number of Elderly People
A newly released government report have shown that the city is planning to add around 8,000 more beds for its elderly at local welfare centers. The decision to add more beds is due to a statistic reports that showed the number of holders of Shenzhen hukou holders that are 60 years old or older have already reached 150,000.
This number along with the elderly population without hukou totals 420,000. The amount of public accommodation for the elderly is currently insufficient in meeting the demand and needs of such population. Beds in local nursing homes are reserved for the next couple of years. Lawmakers in the city are proposing a law that will improve the service for the elderly by next year.
According to plans a comprehensive service center will be established once completed the center will have 700 beds to offer along with professional care and rehabilitation for low-income elderly people that are living alone and cannot take care of themselves.
Welfare centers at the 10 districts will also be included in the expansion that will bring the total number of beds to 2,150 elderly residents.
