Newly Opened High Speed Rail Poses No Threat to Airline Companies
The high-speed rail that links Shenzhen to Beijing is now open and poses a challenge to airlines operating in both cities. During its maiden voyage the G72 train left Shenzhen carrying 300 passengers around 7:56 am and is expected to arrive Beijing at 6:21 pm the same day. A pair of train will be commuting between both cities with travel time of 10 hours and 25 minutes.
The train is now compared to air travel, and travelers prefer the train due to its safety and punctuality but are hoping that the fare could be lower. Some passengers say that the 940 yuan train fare is acceptable but find the 2,927 VIP ticket too expensive. Airline companies does not see the high speed rail as a threat and flights are more time efficient since it will only take 3 hours to fly between the two cities. Also the airports at both cities are linked with the Metro services making them more convenient to get to and from.
Plane fare between the two cities are now being sold at a discounted price of 1,400 yuan which is equivalent to a first class seat on the high speed train, an airline representative also said that there is only one train leaving from both cities compared to the two flights leaving which is more flexible to passengers.
