Famous Indian Conductor Gave New Year Concert
Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra gave a concert at the Shenzhen Concert Hall for New Year. The will the second time the Indian conductor and the Orchestra performed in front of the Shenzhen audience. The last time they performed in Shenzhen was five years ago.
The concert started with the Red Flag De, which was composed by the famous Chinese composer Lu Qiming. Several other selections included waltzes by Strauss and works of Beethoven and Brahms. Mehta and the orchestra prepared two sets of repertoire for the organizers to chose from and they chose the one that was more in tune to the festive ambiance of New Year.
Zubin Mehta is known for his flamboyant, forceful and vigorous style of conducting. Born to a musical family in Mumbai, his talent was evident even at a young age. At 20 years of age he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He is the music director for the philharmonic orchestra in New York, Israel and Los Angeles.
Mehta doesn’t think that the cultural differences are obstacles when it comes to interpreting musical works. The difference between oriental and western cultures when they play works of famous composers will not matter is in the understanding of music that matters.
