Apple to Launch a Cheaper Model of the iPhone
Apple is now working on plans that will allow the company to make cheaper versions of the iPhone and is said to launch the device within this year. Apple have been working on making a low end iPhone for years and have recently accelerated its development as the company’s supremacy in the smart phones is slipping.
The lower end iPhone model will still look like the standard iPhone but with a cheap body. The company will make a casing out of polycarbonate plastic compared to the aluminum case of the iPhone 5 thus allowing Apple to lower its cost. Other parts will remain the same or recycled from older iPhone models.
By launching a cheaper iPhone the company makes a big shift in corporate strategy. Before Apple was prioritizing profits over scale while offering a small number of products that targeted the high end market. The less expensive iPhone is a way for the company to grab a market share and introduce the brand to more people. Also prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S, Apple was already developing designs for cheaper models that differed by the kind of material that were used for the back and sides of the phone but has suspended after some executives thought that a second product will complicate the manufacturing process.
Apple chose to keep the older iPhone models for a lesser price, but now the company is pressured in making the iPhone more affordable.
