Li Na Advances to the Second Round of the Australian Open
Li Na is on route for her quest to clinch the Australian Open in which she tried so hard but was not able to take the top spot by defeating Kazakhstan’s Sesil Karatanrcheva 6-1, 6-3 for the first round win.
Li Na who declared earlier that the Australian Open was by far her favorite grand slam which also had her most consistent results in Melbourne by reaching the semis in 2010, the final in 2011 plus the fourth round last year. Li was defeated by the recently retired Kim Clijsters in 2011 and in 2012. This year many believe that Li will be the fifth likeliest to lift the championship trophy behind Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska.
Li will be facing Belarusian Olga Govortsova for the second round. Li has a 2-0 head to head advantage over Govortsova and the two haven’t played each other since 2009. Li will also get the chance to see compatriot Wu Di in playing his first round match against Ivan Dodig of Croatia. This will be the first time China will be represented by a male in the majors since Mei Fuchi played the Wimbledon in 1959.
Wu ranked 186 in the world earned the Asia Pacific wildcard for this year’s first grand slam during a play off last October scoring wins against high ranked players from Thailand and Japan.
