Weekend Saw a Large Number of Cross Border Travelers
A number of cross border travelers are trapped in large crowds during the weekend while they were waiting to pass buffer zones between Shenzhen and Hong Kong at local checkpoints which signaled the start of the Spring Festival travel season.
A lot of outbound travelers spent at least an hour waiting at the buffer zones due to a huge number of travelers in which some are saying the slowest entry inspections by Hong Kong officials. Travelers have started to complain on the lack of efficient directions coming from Hong Kong immigration officers. Some say that Hong Kong didn’t separate ordinary travelers that are subjected to manual inspections from travelers that are qualified in using e-channels.
Hong Kong residents should only have to wait 15 minutes or less before they reached cross border inspections, while the travelers must wait less than 30 minutes. Officers at the Hong Kong Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point that connects to Futian Checkpoint said that they were not expecting the huge number of travelers in the weekend and were not prepared to handle such a large number.
The immigration department in Hong Kong has opened e-channels to mainland travelers in January received praises at first for the service but later attracted criticism from travelers saying that the number of e-channels is too small.
