More Residents Buying Face Masks to Prevent Catching the FluAs the fear of catching the flu virus intensifies thus making air filtering masks the most demanded item in Shenzhen. Last week Beijing have already reported four influenza related casualties

There are also 21 cases of H1N1 virus detection at checkpoints at the Shenzhen border and many of the citizens are starting to wear masks in crowded places such as shopping malls, checkpoints and Metro stations. Pharmacies are now stocking their shelves with masks and selling antivirus medications while drugstores in Futian and Jingtian district are displaying masks of various sizes. These drugstores saw a steady increase in masks sales and sometimes they run out.

Sales of antivirus medications have also risen as changes in temperatures have intensified the flu season.  Pharmacies in Hong Kong saw heavy sales are mainland shoppers are buying medicines that will help them fight off the flu virus before the start of the Spring Festival holiday.

This prompted checkpoint officials to beef up their inspections and passengers traveling through Futian Checkpoint are required to declare abnormal body temperatures.
