Shekou Port Aging Drainage System to be Improved
A 17.5 million yuan government funded project in Nanshan that is aimed to improve the aging drainage system at Shekou Port starting this month. The project will be removing 1,435 meters of old pipes in the area and will install 2,090 meters of new pipes along with 860 meters of rainwater drainage pipes.
This project is expected to decrease the amount of pollutants that are being discharged into Shenzhen Bay. Road improvements will also be done and will span around 8,000 square meters plus 17 wells will be constructed to intercept the sewage plus 140 more wells will be built that for regular system checks and maintenance. Most of this drainage pipes found in old residential areas and urban villages that are found near Shekou port are small and are already damaged.
Local city advisers are now raising concerns on the water pollution that are caused by the old pipes since domestic sewage are being discharged through these pipelines directly into the bay. They are now calling the city to do the reconstruction of the drainage system.
The new drainage system will collect domestic sewage from residential area found around Shekou Port then it will be channeled to the waste water treatment plant in Shekou.
