Flower Sales Slows Down Due to New Regulation
In anticipation of the Chinese New Year and Spring Festival, flower stores and markets tend to overstock their shelves with popular flowers. Bu the manager for the biggest research and cultivation base for the butterfly orchid is starting to get worried at the company is trying to find ways to sell nearly 60,000 butterfly orchids.
The company hoped to supply local flower shops with at 90,000 butterfly orchids for the Spring Festival but only manage to sell only 30,000 and the wholesale price per orchid have dropped to 25 yuan compared to 30 yuan last year. He said the market is totally different this year but as long as they can sell the remaining flowers they will be okay.
The slow sales of flowers can be attributed to the new regulation that was implemented by the Central Government that restricted extravagances in government activities. Several government institutions canceled orders for flowers that they use for decoration and thus many of the local flower shops cut down or have canceled their orders for the butterfly orchid.
The butterfly orchid was the best selling flower in Shenzhen with retail price reaching 1,000 yuan for some variety of the flower. But due to the reduction of sales to government institutions the prices dropped down with the price for an ordinary butterfly orchid was as 55 yuan last year and now one can be bought for 30 yuan or less.
Large potted orange tress also faces a weak market due to the same reasons, but prices for small potted orange trees have not been affected since most of their customers are families.
