Research Institute Presents Two Plans in Increasing Parking Fees
The transportation research institute presented two plans in increasing parking fees in the city on which officials are hoping that one will be chosen and will eventually reduce traffic and improve that air quality in Shenzhen.
Under the first plan, authorities will be increasing daytime parking fees found in nonresidential areas during weekdays and parking fees found in residential areas will be unchanged. The plan states that between 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays, parking in high traffic areas will cost 15 yuan an hour. While from 8 pm to 8 am parking costs 2 yuan an hour with a cap of 10 yuan a night.
During weekends parking in high traffic areas will cost 6 yuan an hour from 8 am to 8 pm, low traffic areas the daytime parking fees will be 40 percent cheaper and parking fees at hospitals will remain unchanged. This basically means that the first plan will increase the ceiling on fees but reduce standard parking fees during nighttime and weekends. Maximum parking fees under this plan will be 180 yuan for the whole day and 10 yuan at night. This plan will be affecting commuters that park their vehicles in busy office areas.
The second plan considers setting a staggered fee rate that will be highest during the morning and evening rush hours. Basically charging an additional 10 yuan to drivers leaving parking lots at 7:15 am and 9:15 am and from 5:15 pm and 7:15 pm. Fees for drivers leaving parking lots from 7:45 am and 8:45 am and from 5:45 pm and 6:45 pm on weekdays will be charged 20 yuan. This means the second plan will reduce parking fees to half in low traffic areas.
