New Airport Terminal Part of City Projects Planned for This Year
Terminal C of the Shenzhen International Airport is rumored to open in the latter half of this year. Once it opens passengers will no longer be using terminal A and B. the two current terminals will then be used for other purposes other than major airline travel.
Although airport officials are not giving any details, several media organizations are saying that the terminals might be renovated into exhibition centers. The new Terminal C has an area of 450,000 square meters and will be offering 65 berths, 14 long distance berths and more than 200 boarding counters.
In 2011 Chengdu airport surpassed Shenzhen airport for having the fourth largest passenger turnover in China and in 2012 Shenzhen airport have handled more than 29 million passengers but its growth was bottle-necked by terminals A and B. to further facilitate the use of the new terminal, a 4.5 kilometer east west Jichang South Road will be constructed that will be the major link between Terminal C, the national highway 107 and Bao’an Boulevard and will end at Hezhou Flyover on the Guangzhou Shenzhen Expressway. Road construction will begin in June and will be done by August.
The new airport terminal is one of the projects that the local government is planning for this year, other projects include improvement in education, housing, health care, food safety, social security, culture, public security and transportation. The city is also planning to expand enrollment capacity by 23,000 before the year ends and community clinics will also start implementing home services this year.
