Organ Donation Program to Expand to More Regions in China
China is planning to expand a pilot organ donation network nationwide before the year ends. Executive vice president of the Red Cross Society of China Zhao Baige said that Red Cross is planning to ask all provinces and regions that are not covered by the program to join.
The organ donation programs aims to establish a viable system that will allow sharing of information of deceased organ donors and those who are waiting for organ donations and at the same time to stay connected with local hospitals for potential donors as well. The program started in March of 2010 with 19 provinces. Red Cross offices in these provinces set up offices to further advocate the importance of organ donations.
It’s up to these offices to find potential organ donors and to establish communications with the family to get permission to donate and to act as witness of the procurement of the organs. Then it will be automatically assigned to the online China Organ Transplant Response System which was designed by the Ministry of Health that connects hospitals nationwide.
