China Choses Beckham to be Their Global Soccer Ambassador
China named David Beckham as their first global soccer ambassador in hopes to revive the image of the games that was plagued by a match fixing scandal and an exodus of international stalwarts from the country’s league.
Beckham who recently joined the French club Paris Saint-Germain will help bring the Chinese Super League to the world stage and promote the games in the world most populous country. In a statement released by IMG, Beckham said that he is honored to be given such an important role and be part of the Chinese football history. Beckham is also excited of the prospects of promoting football to Chinese sports fans as he seen the growing interest in football in the country.
China gained attention was players such as Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka and other high profile coaches such as Italian Marcello Lippi choosing CSL as their preferred destination to continue their careers. But after one season both players ended their Chinese sojourn and expressed the desire to play in a higher level.
Beckham is one of the most recognizable football players in the world, he has also served as the special ambassador for the London Olympics.
