Plans to Subsidize Pilot Locations for Garbage Classification
The city urban management will soon release a plan that will subsidize the 500 pilot locations that was set aside for garbage classification around the city. And in an effort to promote garbage classification further the director of the garbage classification office Lou Xiangdong answered questions from the public online on the bureau’s official Weibo account.
The amount and type of subsidies will be decided by the amount of waste that is reduced by proper classification. For example a 240 liter of kitchen waste sorted amounts to a 66 yuan subsidy. The garbage classification was been piloted at 500 selected locations which includes schools, restaurants, residential communities and industrial parks. And the bureau is planning to complete the pilot program this year and the results will decide on how to promote the program further in the city.
The city produces more than 13,000 tons of waste every day and the amount is said to reach 17,000 tons a day by the year 2015. The city has nine waste disposal facilities which include seven refuse incineration facilities and two landfills. The landfills handle a total of 8,000 tons of waste each day and are already overburden which shows a change in the residents’ trash disposal.
