New Checkpoint to Link Hong Kong with Eastern Part of Shenzhen
The construction of the Liantang-Heung Yuen Wai Checkpoint located between Shenzhen and Hong Kong is scheduled to start this month based on reports from the Hong Kong Civil Engineering and Development Department.
The department has already approved a budget of HK$510 million for a land leveling project that the first of the four engineering projects set aside for the checkpoint construction. The initial leveling project will be completed in June 2015 along with the flattening of 23 hectares that will include the building of a 11-km road that will link Fanling Road and Shatoujiao Road. The new checkpoint will be the seventh cross border facility found between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and is scheduled to open in 2018.
In 2006 both cities made a study on how to establish the future of the Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai boundary checkpoint to further improve the relations between the two cities. Then in 2008 the decision to build the new checkpoint was finalized.
