Kidz with Heart Mini Olympics Fills Shekou with Action and Activity
Jingshan Villa’s – Shekou was once again filled with a buzz of action and activity Saturday May 4 as the 2nd Annual HUSKY ENERGY KIDZ WITH HEART Mini Olympics was held. This year a record 185 kids (5 – 11 year old) competed in multiple Olympic-style events including a swim, soccer and basketball shoot, short and long-distance running races, and multiple other events.
The event was a fund-raiser organized by Captivating International – a Hong Kong registered charity working in partnership with country based charities in China, Africa and Nepal to help orphaned, abandoned and poorest-of-the-poor children. In China, Captivating supports multiple projects ranging from educational support for girls who have missed out, through to helping entire villages bring to an end poverty through animal husbandry and other efforts.
350 parents, 100 volunteers, local businesses and multiple companies supported the event and a great day of fun and excitement was had by all.
The success of these events come down to good organisation and planning, and the voluntary organizing committee did an outstanding job. Our congratulations and thanks to Claire Taylor of Snap Dragon who lead a wonderfully dedicated team consisting of Vivian Yuan, Jeanetta Robinson, Virlane Torbit, Alena Bednarova, and Melody Liu. Assisting again with fund-raising was Anna Lolomari, with Tracy Chen and Francine Zhang from Captivating also providing amazing ongoing support. The day of the event could not have happened without the amazing help of over 100 volunteers all coordinated by Alena Bednarova.
Special thanks to the many volunteer Group Leaders and Minders who kept 185 kids ordered and controlled, Greg Schultheis from Amrosia who spent hours preparing equipment and using his commanding voice to keep everyone focused; Joel Haines and his team of professional NBA coaches from 5-Star Basketball for running a professional basketball competition; and David Shomaker and Jarrod Biggins from Dawei Awesome swim club for the efficient and fun swimming comp. This group was supported by co-organizing partners on the day – Jingshan Villa’s/China Merchants, International SOS Medical Clinic, Shenzhen Standard and Shenzhen Party – all playing their part in making this a wonderful event. Special mention of thanks also to our MC for the day, Alan Brown ably assisted by Joel Bahr. There are so many more to thank, so thank you everyone.
As a fund-raiser, this event had fantastic corporate support, thanks in no small part to the fund-raising efforts of Anna Lolomari. The key sponsor of the event for the second year running was Husky Energy who supported the event not only financially, but also with employee volunteers as well as kids and families competing on the day. Fantastic key financial support was also received from Chevron, and Amrosia Global Sourcing and Inspection.
The Jingshan management group in conjunction with China Merchants were gracious to provide to us the free use of their residence for the second year running, along with fantastic support to ensure the event was safe and enjoyable for children. This was so greatly appreciated. Green Packaging, 5-Star Basketball and our two local international schools, SIS and QSI sponsored individual events with the two schools also actively promoting the event to students and staff. Some families also became patrons by making an additional event donation, these were Velez family, Betty Lu family and Hans Bo’s family. As for food and drink, this was voluntarily catered for by Eileen and Steve from THE BOATHOUSE along with other volunteers – they were certainly popular.
But this day was all about the kids. The weather was perfect for a day packed with fun and excitement. Seeing 185 kids competing hard throughout the morning was fantastic. Andrew Colquhoun, co-founder and CEO of Captivating International, said, “Today, charity is all about mutual benefit – people, especially around Shenzhen, are extremely generous to support a good, well managed and honest cause, however, when there is mutual benefit – well, that’s when it really makes sense. Today was all about that – kids and families competing and having fun, getting out from in-front of their Ipads and media devices, and competing in a great, fun environment for a good cause.
That’s what “Kidz With Heart” was started for in the first place, and to see it bigger and better in this its second year is extremely rewarding. Seeing volunteers giving high-5’s, water-guns spraying everyone, and kids genuinely competing as hard as they can – that’s what warms my heart. I can’t wait for next year. The organizing committee and volunteers have been amazing today”.
Congratulations to all participants who each received an Olympics medal and special congratulations to the award winners, who proudly received their gold, silver and bronze medals and proudly held their country flags on the winner’s podium at the end of the event.
Thanks to the support of volunteers, parents, kids and the wonderful corporate support, over RMB150,000 was raised to support the work of Captivating International. In his thank you speech, Andrew Colquhoun stated, “We at Captivating exist to help local grassroots organizations bring hope and a future to children and families who without our collective help face uncertain futures. Thanks to today’s event, Captivating International can keep on course for another year. Thank you Shekou.”
